Chainsaw Maintenance

The chainsaw is a heavy duty equipment designed for heavy duty cutting. But whether you will be using it or not, you have to make sure that your chainsaw is in top condition so you’ll get the results that you want every time you set out for some lumber and other chores that require some serious cutting power.

Among the things you need to look out for is the sharpness of your chainsaw bits. You can tell if the chain is dull if the bits get stuck in the wood instead of grabbing on it and pulling it while the chains slides through. Another thing you must know is that chainsaws throw bits of wood while doing its job, not saw dust. If you get fine saw dust, your chain saw needs some sharpening.

With regards to the chain, you should inspect the chain for any loose contacts or whether it is too tight or too loose. The bar should show no signs of bents, crimped teeth, and loose retaining nuts. Before using the chain saw, always check if the chain runs smoothly around the bar.

The fuel system of your chainsaw needs some checking before and after use and during its layoff period. You see, most chainsaws run on a combination of engine oil and gasoline to function. The ratio, however, varies, depending on the model and manufacturers’ systems. If left unchecked, the mixture can heavily clog the filters, especially if used on a frequent schedule.

The air filter should be taken out and cleaned after every use, since the chain saw always operates in dusty environments. But before you take the air filter out, make sure the exterior parts of the chain saw are clean and you are in a dust free location. If you are using your chain saw more than three times a week, it is best that you replace the air filter once a week.

If you are experiencing engine problems, do not think of saving money by doing the repairs yourself. Unless you are a chainsaw mechanic, let the professionals take care of it since they have the required tools and expertise to get the job done quickly and efficiently.

If you will not use your chainsaw for more than 30 days, you need to do some proper storage procedures. Drain the fuel from the tanks and make sure you use all all remaining fuel by running it until it stops. This will ensure that there is no fuel left in the carburetor and fuel injection system. Next, you need to drain all the engine oil and dismantle the bar and the chain. Place the chain in a container filled with with oil and coat the bar with engine oil and wrap it in a paper. A rust inhibitor to the combustion chambers prevents rust buildup, making your chain saw engine rust free the next time you use it.
