Saturdays are good days for a wild pheasant hunt. Phasianus Colchicus is the scientific name of the common pheasant. Many hunters call it simply pheasant or English pheasant.
Pheasants primarily live in wooded locations. Their food intake is made up mostly of earthworms, snails, spiders, millipedes, and grasshoppers. The stunning birds like to scratch up leaves for these soft invertebrates and they also relish different whole grains and all types of berries. At night, these gorgeous fowl will roost up in the trees and at daybreak they will peck the ground for some tasty treats.
Pheasants is a name widely used for quail, partridge, or ruffed grouse. In the 1800′s, ring-necked pheasant was introduced into the United States. The male pheasant is called a cock and is known to have vibrant brown plumage and most species have a white ring around the neck. It is much more colorful (than the female) with a variety of green and purple markings. Female pheasants are called hens and have a duller looking brownish plumage. The male and female both have strong yellowish beaks and short rounded wings. Male pheasants have tails that are over 20 inches long and protective spurs on the back of their legs that takes them from wild animals.
In some locations, pheasant populations have dropped somewhat due to environmental challenges such as land clearing and air pollution. For the sake of the future of pheasant’s in the United States, there are more and more pheasant farms being started to help boost the local bird populations. Pheasant farms guarantee a better solution for the pheasants to survive and flourish so that future generations can enjoy the bounty of the land.
On the Great Plains, pheasants are commonly found in the fields and around old house places. Pheasants enjoy pecking around grassy fields and often will bed down under old houses and around old farm equipment. In the US there are about 10 million birds compared to about 35 million in the United Kingdom.
In the spring of the year, males will court females by strutting. The head on the male will become bright red and engorged with.feathers puffed out as the male begins strutting in a courtship dance. Males will fight each other until the death at times in order to win the reading rights with a female.
Male pheasants are known to commonly mate with more than one female and, kind of like Elvis, are often followed that one time by a group of females! This is called polyamorous behavior. Female pheasant will lay an egg batch of about 10 eggs after mating. The eggs will be incubated by 23 to 26 days before hatching. Usually this occurs in the late spring and early summer starting in April through June.
