How to Plan A Closet Organizer

Houses of all different sizes will inevitably have closets that you will want to use for storage. You will probably decide at one point or another that it’s time to organize your space, and make more efficient use of your stoage space. The best way to do this, is to do some planning, and find an appropriate closet organizer to fit your closet and your stuff.

So now that you’ve decided that you actually need some sort of organizer in your closet, how do you go about planning for it? You need to make sure that when you’ve finished the storage makeover you have an effective system for organizing and storing your belongings. In order to acomplish this, you need to think about a few different points:

Use of the Closet – how are you going to use this closet? You should try to match the function to the general area of the house that the closet is located in. For example, don’t store your jackets and boots in the upstairs hall, you will probably want them closer to the door where you actually use them.

Available space – some closets will be the reach-in type, while others have the space to be classified as a true walk-in type. Depending on the space avaialable, you may have to tone down your expectations for a fabulous designer closet, or perhaps you will actually have the space for a closet fit to be featured on home and garden tv.

Expense – determine how much you want to spend before you do any shopping. You might want to do some forward thinking and total up all the closets that you might be redesigning in the near future as well so that you are more realistic about this item. Sometimes it makes sense to skimp, especially if you are not all that permanent in your current home, but others may be lucky enough to splurge on a custom built in showroom closet organizer.

Design – this is the point that combines all the previous points. Once you’ve answered all the previous questions, you will be much closer to deciding what the actual design of your closet is going to be. You still must figure out the material, color, and style though, so looking through some magazines devoted to storage solutions might be a good idea before you come to a final decision.

Once you’ve considered all these points, you’re probably ready to start shopping. Now this is a whole new ball game – should you find a closet expert who will design and deliver a complete system for you, or cruise the DIY stores yourself to find a modular system that you can take home and assemble? No matter what you choose, once you have your closet organizer all set up and working, finally living an uncluttered life will be a joy.
